My Mug Shot
By: Emily Pinnow
First, I notice the
colors and pictures on the mug. They remind me of the bright lights and vibrant
colors in the city where the mug originated. There are pictures of sky
scrapers, the statue of liberty, bridges, ferries, and stars. My mug came from
New York, New York. I have never actually traveled to New York, however this
mug was a gift from one of my best friends after his trip to The Big Apple. It
shows images of everything from Times Square, to The Brooklyn Bridge, to a
Central Park Carriage ride. By looking at this mug I feel as if I can
experience a small portion of the city without ever being there. Not only does
it remind me of New York City but it also reminds my friend. We have been best
friends since fifth grade and every time I look at or use my New York mug I am
reminded of him and all the memories we have made together. The next thing I
see when I look at the mug is the brown stain around the rim left from
countless cups of hot tea. This brings about feelings of nostalgia, comfort,
and happiness. Tea has always been a love of mine and this mug allows me to
combine two of my loves: my best friend and my favorite drink. All five senses are
affected by my New York mug. Sight: the visual appeal of this mug is strong for
me. I enjoy the variety of colors and the whimsical placement of pictures.
Sound: I may not
be able to hear anything coming from the mug, but in my head, I can vividly hear
the whistle of a tea kettle.
Touch: When the
mug is full of tea it is warm and soothing. When it is not full it is cold,
begging to be filled with hot tea.
Smell: The mug
evokes the smell of my favorite white peach tea I drink almost every day.
Taste: I know the
mug hold delicious tea, ready to drink. When I see it I cannot wait to taste
the malty flavor of my daily breakfast tea.
All the sensory clues I
receive from my New York mug conjure positive memories and feelings from inside
me.
That's a really cool mug! All those bright-colored prints of landmarks almost make me feel like I'm in New York too. I also enjoyed learning about all of the meaning behind it. A friend, warm tea, comfort....its value goes much deeper than its initial appearance. I'm amazed by the amount of memories and emotions that the objects that are dear to us can hold.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much is going on with that mug! I was intrigued by how many pictures you posted, but after reading your post I see why. I absolutely agree that the bright colors are reminiscent of the city it came from - and I'm sure that was a conscious choice by the people who designed it. It's incredible just how many memories and sense are tied up in this mug. It makes me wonder, if your friend had given you a different mug would you still feel the same way? Or is there something uniquely special about this mug that really resonates with you?
