The pictures depicted above show a Nike shoe that I designed. On page 98 of Daniel H. Pink's A Whole New Mind, he discusses various ways in which one may practice and improve their skills of design. I decided to design a Nike shoe in particular, because I own a pair of Nike running shoes. Because of this, I thought that it would be interesting to design a pair of Nike shoes that are not sold in stores. To design the shoes, I had to click through the various features of the shoe and choose what style/color/symbol to add. The process was surprisingly detailed; it allowed me to customize everything about the shoe, from the symbols/words on the side the shoe to the color of the shoelaces. As shown in the pictures above, I decided to choose burgundy as the main color, adding several silver and black details throughout. One particularly interesting part of the design was the fact that I was able to choose a sort of “star” pattern for the bottom of the shoe, instead of a standard color. When I customized the words and letters on my shoes, I chose to write my name on the sneakers as well as the initials “BJ” for my dorm, ‘Baldwin Jenkins.’ This assignment was, in my opinion, a perfect way to combine practicing a design strategy with fun. Through this, I was able to take something that already existed (a Nike shoe) and put my design skills to practice, turning it into something completely original.

Pink's Sense of Design Practice: "Third Revolution"
