Design Post - Third Revolution

While I view myself as more of a left brained thinker, I find joy in designing mainly because I can make something my own. Pink's section on design helped me better understand the implications of design in our everyday lives, which helped me realize how important right brained thinking has become. We hardly realize it, but everything we use/see in our everyday lives was designed by someone. Designers are responsible for both the aesthetic and functional design of objects and buildings. Because I enjoy the aesthetic part of design the most, I decided to design my own softball bat. I chose to design a softball bat because I am on Whitworth's softball team, and I use my softball bat in practice every day.

Since Whitworth's colors are crimson and black, I decided to design a bat that included these colors. I chose to make the barrel of the bat black since the majority of our uniform is black. In order to add a pop of color and include crimson, I designed the bat with the majority of the logos crimson. One thing that I do not appreciate in designs are the overuse of a color that is not black or white, which is why I chose to do the main logo of the bat in gunmetal. I felt that if I did the main logo crimson, there would be way to much crimson and the effectiveness of crimson on black would be diminished. While designing the handle, I played around with an all black grip tape and a gunmetal grip tape, and I found that the bat looked odd with the grip as all one color. That is why I chose to do the grip black and crimson. I decided to make the nob of the bat gunmetal to even out the dispersement of the gunmetal on the bat. Even dispersal is also why I made the cone of the bat gunmetal (the cone is not visible in the image it is also known as the endcap). I am very pleased with the design I created, and feel I learned a lot from participating in one of Pink's Activities.

Prior to reading Pink's section on design, I was unaware of the large impact design has had on my life. After completing is design activity, I realize that the aesthetic design, along with the functional design, of an object or place greatly impacts every individuals view of the object or place.

  1. I like how you chose to design an object that is very important to you and used school colors. This assignment also made me realize the huge impact of design on our everyday lives. It's hard to believe that nearly everything we touch started as a concept which someone then created, and as you said, design is a very important factor in marketability.

  2. Kylie-great design. Opposing pitchers will be intimidated when they see you come to the plate with this bat in your hands. The red and black handle go well with the way you designed the barrel to create an aesthetic look.
