Community Building Day Reflection

Community Building Day Reflection
By Josh Tandy

Community Building was a really amazing experience that I am glad I got to be a part of.  I had previously worked with students in a similar situation back in Colorado. However, On-Track Academy had a different approach to these student's issues. The teachers at On-Track Academy really seemed to care about all the students and really wanted them to succeed. The students all seemed to enjoy being here and improved here over traditional high school.

When we first showed up to On-Track Academy, I was a little nervous because the students I worked with back in Colorado could be hard to work with. However when I actually got in and started meeting the students, I was relieved that the students were very kind and welcoming to us. We were split up into groups and I worked with one student named Conner. Conner was a very nice guy and I really enjoyed worked with him through out the day. The first station we went to was the scribble machines. My group had a little trouble starting up on the scribble machine, but after we got some "inspiration" from some other group, we were able to get the machine to work. Our group moved to the next station, Frankenstein with stuffed animals. I really enjoyed this station because I got to be Sid from Toy Story for a day. I took the lead in the taking a part of the toys and I had a ball doing it. We then moved on to the Makey Makey station. I again had a great time messing around with all the things you could do with the computer and had a great time playing Billy Jean on a banana. We then moved onto the final station, where we made mobiles. I kind of took a back seat on this project because I am not very artistic and only kind of contributed, but I still enjoyed it. We then went to the debrief and got to answer questions for the On-Track students. Finally, we got back on the bus and went back to Whitworth.

I had a really great time at On-Track Academy. All the students and teachers I met there were very nice and they were very appreciative of the time we spent there. They offered for us to come back and help again, and I would definitely went to go back and help.
